Check Processing White Papers/Case Studies
Community Banks are at a Disadvantage in Fraud Detection
Community banks and credit unions are at a disadvantage. Their lack of necessary internal resources and budget to upgrade their systems and integrate new technologies compared to big banks leads to gaps in fraud coverage, automation capabilities, and outdated systems. These gaps are perilous when almost all industry numbers indicate check fraud is on the rise. Meanwhile, the banking industry is more competitive than ever as new fintech companies like Chime, Brex, and Acorn hit targeted markets. Community banks and credit unions also perform much more manual work compared to these new fintech companies.
OrboGraph’s OrbNet AI Boosts Lockbox Accuracy to 98% For TMR
From the first generation of CITATIONâ„¢, an ongoing commitment to improvement has expanded CITATIONâ„¢ i-Remit's capacity to scale to absorb additional transaction volume without incremental increases in staffing.
Using only high-score results of ICR/OCR technology for CAR/LAR recognition, CITATIONâ„¢ i-Remit attained recognition match rates of 83.7%. To ensure accuracy, a full MICR match process was run and revealed a mismatch rate of 18%. To further improve accuracy and reduce mismatch rates, TMR teamed with OrboGraph to apply AI technology.
The New Standard of AI and GPU: Successes and Flops
We are at the dawn of a new age of intelligence, where Artificial Intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) are transforming our world. Computer systems equipped with AI can be trained to sense, infer, and in other ways “act human” using silicon technology to create artificial neural networks (ANNs) that replicate the inner workings of the human brain.
For those of you savvy in the field of AI, deep learning, GPU’s and CPUs, the use of FLOPS as a subtitle may be amusing. FLOPS is the standard way of measuring of GPU (graphical processing units) performance and represents the number of operations on floating-point numbers which a GPU can perform in a second. As you will read, GPU’s are the underpinnings for AI’s continued expansion!
In the last section, you will see an architectural review of a high volume, high performance configuration of the OrboAnywhere system configured for Anywhere Recognition, Anywhere Validate, and Anywhere Fraud.
Forensic Document Examination: Impact on Banking, Fraud, and Payments
Forensic document examination is foundational for the development of OrboGraph’s OrbNet Forensic AI technology. To assist in describing the applicability of forensics in banking, fraud detection, and payments, Joe J. Gregory, Vice President of Marketing at OrboGraph, interviewed forensic expert and author Khody Detwiler for a deeper dive into the subject and its impact on banking, fraud, and payments.

Document Design Guide
Register below to download more information.
OrboGraph\'s Document Design Guide for Check Processing Automation, Image Quality/Usability and Fraud Prevention describes how to optimize the document design of checks and internal bank documents to achieve maximum benefits across the organization when using automated software for check recognition, image quality usability assurance (IQUA), and fraud prevention. Additionally, this guide will address the implications of image capture and downstream defective images.
By following these guidelines, your organization will experience the following benefits:
• Achieve higher read rates in check processing resulting in a more streamlined operation. The ability to achieve straight-through-processing levels of efficiency is now possible for financial institutions capturing images centrally or in a distributed environment for back-counter or front-counter, teller capture.
• Minimize operational problems and exceptions by limiting defective images within the check processing workflow. IQUA detection software will run more efficiently ensuring that your operation has the least amount of NCI (non-compliant images) when clearing with other organizations.
• Minimize false positive rates within fraud prevention systems by limiting the number of defective images which might cause \"fraud suspects\". Fraud prevention systems can become less effective when a high number of defective images are experienced not only in suspect review efficiency, but image analyzers may also become less accurate, resulting in fraud escapes.

The Check’s Enduring Role in the Payments Ecosystem
During a three-year stretch when electronic payments surged at record pace, the Federal Reserve highlighted an unexpected trend: the total value of U.S. check payments actually rose between 2018 and 2021. Today, Americans still write about 12 billion checks annually — representing nearly triple the dollar value of credit, debit, and prepaid card transactions combined. This Deluxe white paper examines who continues to use checks, the reasons behind their persistence, what the future holds through the end of the decade, and how financial institutions can prepare for their ongoing role in the payments landscape.
Subtitled Pioneers Combine Strategy, Organizational Behavior, and Technology, the white paper is a nice encapsulation of their global survey. Conducted in Spring 2019, the survey attracted a total of 2,555 respondents representing 29 industries and 97 countries. The MIT Sloan/Boston Consulting Group team then interviewed 17 executives leading AI initiatives in large organizations across a broad range of industries, including insurance, software, banking, manufacturing, health care, pharmaceuticals, retail, and mining.
PYMNTS: Leveraging AI and ML to Thwart Scammers
Authorized party fraud represents just 37% of financial institutions’ total fraud losses by dollar value, yet it poses the greatest risk to customer satisfaction and long-term retention — a factor institutions cannot afford to ignore. The newest PYMNTS Intelligence report, “Leveraging AI and ML to Thwart Scammers,” produced in partnership with Hawk, spans 29 pages and includes eight proprietary data charts highlighting how artificial intelligence and machine learning are being applied to prevent fraudsters from gaining the advantage.
Over the past 15 years, paper check volumes in the U.S. have fallen by nearly half, pushing up processing costs on a per-check basis. Yet even with this decline, checks continue to account for approximately $3 trillion in annual payments. This paper explores the implications of shrinking check volumes, the cost dynamics of processing, and why checks remain a critical part of the payments system despite their gradual decline.
Spot & Stop Payments Fraud: An in-depth look at payments fraud prevention
While newer payment rails like ACH have seen rising fraud, checks remain a leading target. According to the 2024 AFP® Payments Fraud and Control Survey, 65% of organizations reported experiencing check fraud attempts. This paper focuses on the persistence of check fraud, why it continues to challenge financial institutions, and the strategies needed to mitigate its impact.
"A serious story told with a bit of humor, self-deprecation, and some education on banking, payments and congressional lobbying. By Phyllis Meyerson and David Walker.
Check 21 was the fastest transformation in payment history from an archaic, paper-based system to an electronic check system."
