The Matrix AI: “Remember, all I’m offering is the truth. Nothing more.”

We previously took a look at the similarities and differences between The Matrix experience and OrboGraph's OrboZone experience. Both offer a truly dynamic experience, so we would be remiss not to take a deeper dive into another key pillar in The Matrix Film Series: The AI driving the Machines.

With the release of The Matrix Resurrections Trailer (see below), we can see some familiar faces as Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity. It appears that Morpheus has been recast with newcomer Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and the latest film is introducing a mostly new cast of AI-driven antagonists.

Since details are sparse about the new characters, we are going to take a look at three of the major AI characters from the previous three Matrix films: The Architect, The Oracle, and Agent Smith.

Like they say in the movies, let's get "plugged in."

The Artificial Intelligence of the Machines

For the most part, the machines are the clear antagonists in the film franchise. From the "squiddies," all the way up to the Architect, these machines all possess powerful artificial intelligence. As mentioned above, we are going to focus on the three main artificial intelligence sentient beings.

The Architect

The Architect -- known as the "father of the Matrix" -- created the Matrix. In The Matrix Reloaded, we learned key details about The Architect to help us understand more about the artificial intelligence:

The first Matrix I designed was quite naturally perfect; it was a work of art, flawless, sublime. A triumph equaled only by its monumental failure. The inevitability of its doom is apparent to me now as a consequence of the imperfection inherent in every human being. Thus I redesigned it, based on your history, to more accurately reflect the varying grotesqueries of your nature. However, I was again frustrated by failure.

What we can garner from this quote is that this AI is not unlike the artificial intelligence used today -- particularly for fraud. The second iteration of AI was designed based on billions or trillions of data points from human history to build a profile of what the world will look like. This is similar to what is being done in fraud, where profiles are built off of hundreds, thousands, and even millions of items to create a profile of an account/holder. Have we already created the baseline for The Architect...?

The Oracle

The Oracle serves as a guide to the protagonists of the franchise, including Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus -- providing them with the prophecy of "The One" -- leading Morpheus to Neo and providing the predictions of the future for each character. When examining the AI, we can make the argument that this AI is not unlike the predictive AI utilized in healthcare. This particular AI will analyze the data and make predictions on outcomes based on the data. And, as the following quote shows, it is up to humans to do what we want with the data.

"I Expect Just What I've Always Expected - For You To Make Up Your Own Damn Mind. Believe Me, Or Don't."

From predicting diseases for diagnosis and treatment, to predicting denial issues in healthcare revenue cycle, this AI is important to the healthcare industry... or the continued existence of the human species in the movies.

Agent Smith

Easily identified as the main antagonist in the franchise, it is a bit more difficult to pinpoint the artificial intelligence possessed by Agent Smith. Initially a computer program designed to eliminate humans that are interfering with The Matrix, Agent Smith evolves over the three movies.

What is undeniable about the AI of Agent Smith is that it must be using cloud-computing. How do we know this? Simple! It is his ability to copy himself and scale at rapid speed. As you can see from the quotes, there are billions of copies:

"Go ahead, shoot. The best thing about being me…there's so many of me."

To copy the code so many times will take a huge amount of data storage and incredible processing speed. This cannot be completed by a single server, and it only make sense that the AI runs on the cloud to easily duplicate and scale as the numbers grow!

Conclusion

And there you have it! The Matrix film franchise from the #OrboZone perspective. While this particular application of artificial intelligences serves a different purpose, it's not unlike the artificial intelligence currently used by OrboGraph. And, as Agent Smith said in the Matrix Reloaded:

It is purpose that created us, purpose that connects us, purpose that pulls us, that guides us, that drives us; it is purpose that defines, purpose that binds us."

Who knows what the next installment of the franchise holds? We will be sure to race over to the theater to see what Director Lana Wachowski and Warner Bros. have in store for us!
